About Our Core Emergency Ultrasound Course
Programme
By the end of this course, you will understand the principles of ultrasound and be able to apply this in using a range of different ultrasound machines.
The course covers:
- Ultrasound physics.
- Knobology (how to operate ultrasound machines)
- PoCUS Clinical Governance
- Focused Assessment for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)
- Ultrasound-guided (USG) peripheral and central Intravenous (IV) access
- Echo in Life Support (ELS)
- USG fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB)
- Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST)
- Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (eFAST) for additional assessment of the thorax for pneumothorax and hemothorax
Structure
Upon registration, you will gain access to 12 ultrasound videos covering the core knowledge required for the course. Each video on clinical applications, physics, and knobology concludes with a quiz focused on that specific topic, allowing you to test your understanding and retention of the material.
On the course day, lectures and live demonstrations will alternate with focused practical sessions. During the practical sessions, you will work with a variety of ultrasound machines and healthy volunteers, all under faculty guidance and supervision. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to use handheld ultrasound devices, scannable manikins, and state-of-the-art ultrasound simulators capable of demonstrating a wide range of realistic pathologies.
Outcomes
You will learn how to handle an ultrasound machine, how to optimise an image, how to position an ultrasound probe to obtain the required image and how to adjust the position within three-dimensional space.
You will learn how to recognise the pathologies required in the RCEM curriculum.
You will learn how to use ultrasound to guide a cannula into a peripheral or central vein and to guide a needle when performing a fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB).
