About Our Core Emergency Ultrasound Course

What Does the Level 1 US Course Cover?

By the end of this course, you will understand the principles of ultrasound and be able to apply this in using a range of different ultrasound machines. You will understand the Point-Of-Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) Curriculum of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine. You will understand the knowledge and skill requirements in each of the clinical application areas of the curriculum and be able to apply this knowledge and these skills in obtaining diagnostically useful images across the range of the Introductory and Intermediate levels of the curriculum.

The course covers:

Ultrasound physics.
Knobology (how to operate ultrasound machines)
PoCUS Clinical Governance
Focused Assessment for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)
Ultrasound-guided (USG) peripheral and central Intravenous (IV) access
Echo in Life Support (ELS)
USG fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB)
Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST)
Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (eFAST) for additional assessment of the thorax for pneumothorax and hemothorax

What is the Structure of the Course?

As soon as you register you will be given access to 12 ultrasound videos. These cover the core knowledge required. Each of the clinical application videos, the physics and knobology videos finish with a quiz, focused on that area, to enable you to test how well you have understood and retained the information.

On the day of the course there will be short presentations on knobology and the clinical applications along with live demonstrations. These are deliberately kept short to maximise the scanning time as it is assumed that the videos have already been watched. For the ECHO in Life Support there will be a more detailed presentation as many candidates require this. Between the presentations there will be a series of practical sessions covering: knobology and AAA, eFAST, ELS and procedures (vascular access and fascia iliaca blocks).

During the practical sessions you will work with a range of different ultrasound machines and healthy volunteers with faculty guidance and supervision. You will also work with handheld ultrasound devices, scannable manikins and state-of-the-art ultrasound simulators, able to demonstrate a wide range of realistic pathologies. You will receive guidance from the faculty, however there is also a great deal of freedom to use the equipment and the time to maximise the learning benefit for yourself.

The course finishes with a quiz based on the content of the day.

What Skills Will You Develop?

You will learn how to handle an ultrasound machine, how to optimise an image, how to position an ultrasound probe to obtain the required image and how to adjust the position within three-dimensional space.

You will learn how to recognise the pathologies required in the curriculum.

You will learn how to use ultrasound to guide a cannula into a peripheral or central vein and to guide a needle when performing a fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB).

FAQ

Do I receive a certificate at the end of the Core EM Ultrasound course?

After each of our courses you will receive a certificate via email rewarding you the correct amount of CPD points for the course you have attended, this is accredited based on the amount of active learning hours you have completed during the course.

I have not received my CPD certificate.

We aim to send out certificates on the course date or the following day. If you have not yet received your certificate please check your junk mail, if it is not there, please send us an email and we will resend the certificate.

Do you offer Ultrasound sign offs?

While we have previously offered a US finishing school this is not something we are currently offering. We can offer those who are struggling to complete triggered assessments to come along on our scheduled Level 1 courses (at a lesser fee). This depends on the appropriate faculty that we have available to know which dates this is possible. While we cannot guarantee that we will be able to offer a full sign off for you, we could certainly aid in completing your triggered assessments.

Do I need to have a career in ED to apply for US courses?

ED staff are encouraged to attend these courses but realistically anybody can take this course to help further their medical career, because this course provides the basic knowledge of US and more, we do encourage candidates to have little knowledge of US, but this is not imperative.

How is the Core EM Ultrasound Course taught?

Our courses are taught with a combination of practical and theory. We focus heavily on the practical side of US because we believe hands on scanning is the best kind of learning, therefore we encourage and provide online pre-course material to go through before the course (this is about 3 hours all together) with a light reminder of these during the course days, highly qualified ED consultants will oversee all scanning. We also include a quiz at the end of the day, for some light-hearted fun but also for you to know how much you have learned in the duration of the course. Once the course is done you will also have access to the online resources for a further 6 months for a refresh if the need be.

Can you provide further information for Core EM Ultrasound (Level 1) course?

Our one-day course costs £350. The course typically starts at 9am and ends at 17:10pm. We address the knowledge and practical skills recommended by RCEM to help you to achieve the four main components of Emergency Ultrasound (eFAST, AAA, ELS and VA). Our online pre-course learning provides a good understanding of US physics and good governance, we ask you to complete the online material so we can focus heavily on the practical aspects of the course. We do provide short lectures and live demos before each practical sessions as a friendly refresh. We provide pathologies using our advanced simulators as well as being able to scan normal subjects. Do I need to complete the pre-course material before the course?

We offer pre-course learning before the Core EM Ultrasound Course. We suggest that you complete all the pre-course learning as this allows us to focus more on the practical side of the course rather than lectures. We will provide a refresh of information with the lectures, but they will be massively reduced.

My account has not got access to my pre-course learning.

What time do your Core EM Ultrasound Courses start and finish?

We start our courses at 8:30 with registration offering coffee and pastries, and the course generally starts at 9am. We tend the close the course at no earlier than 5:10pm and no later than 5:45pm.

I placed an order for the Core EM Ultrasound Course but have not received a confirmation?

If you have not received an online confirmation for your order this could be for a number of reasons. One of the most common reasons for this tends to be forgetting to confirm your order and payment at the end. Another reason could be because your payment has been declined/failed. If you find that payment has gone through, and this appears on your bank account please email us at info@bromleyemergency.com and we will investigate this matter further for you.

My employer/Trust is paying, are you able to send them an invoice?

If the costs will be made through a Trust, we can issue an invoice. However, before we do that, we require a PO number from your Trust accounts.

Do you provide lunch on the day?

We offer a buffet style lunch consisting off salads, hot bites, sandwiches, and sides. Our lunch has always received great feedback as we continue to work and better it with each course. If you have a dietary requirement, please let us know by filling in the “dietary requirement” box when processing your order and we be sure to cater to this.

I can’t attend my course date at short notice, what happens next?

Because of our T&C’s we cannot offer a refund after 2 weeks before the course, we can offer you a place on our ‘Short Notice List’ which means if we have a last-minute cancellation or cannot fill all the seats on a course date, we can offer the seat to you. Please be aware that this will be short notice. (This may differ based on circumstances.)

I want to transfer to another date, how does this work?

A course transfer is something we can offer if it is 2 or more weeks before the course date, this is because will need a long enough period to be able to find a replacement for our seat on the original course date. A course transfer must be put in writing to our email info@bromleyemergency.com.

What is the cancellation policy?

When cancelling a course date, please make sure in all circumstances the cancellation is made in writing. Candidates who cancel 4 weeks in advance will receive a full refund (minus a 5% admin fee) candidates cancelling 2 to 4 weeks in advance will receive a 75% refund (minus 5% admin fee), if the vacated spot can be filled, you will receive a full refund, minus the admin fee. Candidates cancelling 2 weeks before the course date will not be entitled to a refund or transfer, unless the vacated seat can be filled you will receive a full refund (less a 5% admin fee).

When will I receive course information?

Once you have paid for a seat on a course, we will send you a confirmation email to let you know we have reserved your seat on the course. Two weeks before the course we will send you an email with the appropriate course information attached. It will provide information of where we are based, a map of how to get to us from our closest train stations, a programme of the day and parking closest to our site. It will also contain links for online pre-course learning if it is required for your course.
